Surely there’s something more important that you could do with your life than having your photograph taken on a regular basis?

i used to know some beginning models about 20 years ago, and they managed either by having small apartments, or living with one or more apartmentmates. it must still be the same way today.

I have a lot of friends who lived in New York for their modeling and most of them stayed in model apartments that are owned by the agency. You basically share a small apartment with a few other models which is much cheaper to do than staying at a hotel or renting your own room
Although I’ll warn you, the model apartments that I visited were pretty crappy–really old and dirty buildings.

Many of them have jobs at night – restaurants, bars, nightclubs, late shift temp jobs, etc if they don’t have rich parents. Just look at the staff of trendy NY bars, clubs and restaurants – every girl working there is at least 5′10″ and gorgeous. There are some places like Coffee Shop on Union Square that are owned by 2 former models who pretty much only hire current and former models to work as waitresses and bartenders.
If an agency thinks you have real potential, they may sometimes loan you money to pay for your rent in the model apartment, but then will take it out of your pay as you get booked on jobs. So instead of taking their standard 10-15% commission in NY, they will take out 50% your first few months in order to pay off the debt. Model apartments are not luxurious – they are like dorms with 2 sets of bunkbeds in a small bedroom and a chaperone living there

I’m not a model, but everyone starting out in a field in NYC shares an unbelievably small apartment with other people. The agency may know someone looking for a roommate. By the way, you will need first month rent, last month’s rent and deposit. It’s very expensive
