Why do fashion models always have that “miserable” and depressed “drugged-up” look?
Background: I am a 22-year old male college graduate. I thought about this question as I was skimming through my newest New York Magazine (it’s the Fall Fashion issue). Why is it that all the women in these designer ads (Prada, Louis Vuitton, Marc Jacbos, etc.) look either like aliens or like they have serious mental problems and/or a bad drug habit? I can certainly understand the artistic value behind the photographs (many of them are very interesting), but what is the reasoning behind having all these fashion models looking so dismal? Is there something I’m missing? Perhaps someone could try to explain.

haha because they’re starving and a little drunk. Most models are ugly anyway. There are a few beautiful one’s like Amber valetta and a few others that I dont know their names. but the ones that are actually pretty are naturally skinny and dont look sick. If you’ve ever watched Americas next top model. Most of them are not cute.

they aren’t supposed to look ‘drugged’ they are supposed to look washed up. its so that the clothes wear them, and your attention will be on the clothes, not the model.

Well, as a model you are SUPPOSED to look expression-less and bored when you are walking down the runway. Ever seen a fashion show? They all look bored, and that’s what they are supposed to do so that the focus is on the CLOTHING not on their face. Get it? Sort of like wearing plain clothing to bring the focus to your shiny bag or something.
In ads, they might look like aliens because the ads are so edited to make their bodies look perfect that they look like freaks because they are so PERFECT.
Some of them look like they have a bad drug habit because they do, many models do drugs.
Models are known for their expressionless and bored face, it is just what they do.

If someone looks unusual, they’ll draw your attention. And what do ads want? To draw your attention. And smiling isn’t fashionable apparently.
